A Person, Not a Lump of Flesh

Luke 1:44 in the Bible says:

“For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.”

This tells us whether the unborn child is a person or a lump of flesh.

  1. The word “babe’ is an old word for baby. A baby, by definition, is a person.
  2. The words “the babe leaped in my womb for joy” tell us that the baby experienced joy. Joy is an emotion. You cannot have emotion without intellect. Therefore, the baby had emotion and intellect. The words “the babe leaped…for joy” tell us that the baby expressed emotion. You cannot express emotion without will. Therefore, the baby had will. Therefore, the baby had emotion, intellect, and will. Anything that has these three things is a person. Therefore, the baby was a person.
